McKinney-Vento (Homeless Education) Program

The Covington County School District supports students and families experiencing homelessness in accordance with the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.

Students who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence may qualify for educational protections and support services.

Who Qualifies for Services?

A student may qualify if they are:

• Living with others due to loss of housing or economic hardship • Living in a motel, hotel, shelter, or campground • Living in a car, park, abandoned building, or temporary setting • An unaccompanied youth not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian

Dispute Resolution

If there is a disagreement regarding eligibility or school placement:

• The student will remain enrolled during the dispute process • A written explanation will be provided • Families may appeal to the Mississippi Department of Education
